What causes frozen shoulder?

Frozen shoulder is also known as adhesive capsulitis and is caused by an inflammation of the connective tissue of the joint. Too much tension in surrounding muscles e.g. pectoralis or latissimus dorsi can pull on the shoulder and lead to friction of the capsule. It is also thought that there may be an autoimmune component to the condition. Acupuncture Clinic Sunshine - Frozen Shoulder Treatment

This is very interesting because from a TCM perspective the large intestine channel travels through the front of the shoulder and down through the arm. The large intestine or gut is thought to house much of the immune system responses for the body. It is not uncommon with frozen shoulder that there is an associated inflammatory gut condition. How do we treat it?

The combination of acupuncture and massage is often very effective in the treatment of Adhesive Capsulitis. Trigger point massage is effective in releasing tension in the local muscles and acupuncture helps to move energy more effectively. Initially we work on drawing the local stagnation. We may also use cupping therapy to draw stagnation from the local muscles. Acupuncture Clinic Sunshine - Frozen Shoulder Treatment

The large intestine or gut is thought to house much of the immune system responses for the body. It is not uncommon with frozen shoulder that there is an associated inflammatory gut condition. The shoulder is made up of three bones: The shoulder blade, the collarbone, and the upper arm bone, or humerus. The shoulder has a ball-and-socket joint. The round head of the upper arm bone fits into this socket. Connective tissue, known as the shoulder capsule, surrounds this joint. Synovial fluid enables the joint to move without friction. Frozen shoulder is thought to happen when scar tissue forms in the shoulder. This causes the shoulder joint’s capsule to thicken and tighten, leaving less room for movement. Movement may become stiff and painful. The exact cause is not fully understood, and it cannot always be identified. Crossover arm stretch is helpful remedy by Holding the upper arm of the affected side, gently pull the arm across in front of you, under the chin. Hold for 30 seconds. Relax and repeat. Anyone experiencing stiffness in the shoulder joint should seek medical attention sooner rather than later to prevent permanent stiffness. Frozen shoulder can only be prevented if it is caused by an injury that makes shoulder movement difficult. Anyone who experiences such an injury should talk to a doctor about exercises for maintaining mobility and flexibility of the shoulder joint.
